SoundID App vs. Plugin with Pro Tools

Forgive me if this question has been asked and answered already, but can someone tell me if it's better (or more efficient) to use Sound ID as a plugin on my monitor bus, or to use the Sound ID app on my computer and set my hardware output source in Pro Tools to Sound ID rather than my UA Apollo?

And a related question: If I accidentally have both engaged - the app os running AND the plugin is engaged on the monitor bus, am I running the signal through my Sound ID speaker profile twice - meaning, doubly correcting the curve?

Let me know if my question is not clear. Thanks much for the help.

Hi,

Thanks for your post!

It actually might depend on your workflow and what you find more comfortable. Some users do prefer using the SoundID Reference plugin in their DAW (the plugin is also true zero-latency), while others are running the DAW output via the SoundID Reference standalone app, which means you don't have to worry about bypassing the calibration when rendering. It also may be worth trying both workflows and see which one you prefer.

And, yes, if you are running both the plugin in your DAW and also have the SoundID Reference app set as the output device in your DAW, double calibration will take place, so you should only utilize one of these options for your DAW at a time.

I hope this helps, but hopefully some of our users can also share their experience with the plugin and the standalone app in their workflows :)

Zane,

Thank you so much for responding! This is such a helpful reply, it should be included in the Sound ID manual! (Perhaps, this information is there and I just missed it.) I fear that I have been "double-calibrating" just this past week, as I've been running both the plugin on my Mix Bus while, I believe, the app was open and my DAW output was set to SoundID. Fortunately, the calibration in my home studio is pretty light and I haven't delivered any mixes this week, so no harm done. Thanks again!
