IEMs vs over ear headphones = less person to person variability?

I already use SW for my DT880's. I was wondering if there is less person to person variability of frequency response with IEMs?

My theory being IEM's remove the outer ear structure from the equation which is a big part of the perceived audio, resulting in a more consistent delivery of the perceived sound response.

Anyone with some practical experience?

Hi Simon,

Thanks for reaching out!

Regarding the person to person variablity of frequency response with IEMs - the seal and ear canal shape play a bigger role with IEMs, so the sound translation can differ a lot from person to person. This is the reason why we didn’t include IEMs in Reference for such a long time, and also why we decided to reject them for the individual calibration service.
